South Carolina Spine Center is the only spine center in the state of South Carolina to be included in Spine Center Network, an exclusive national listing of credentialed spine centers of excellence. To be included in this national network, a spine center must combine a team on non-surgical Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation MDs working with spine-specialized surgeons and therapists — all under one roof. This team must emphasize non-surgical treatment options in advance of surgery, and provide extensive patient education about injury prevention. For example, each year the center prints and distributes at its own expense a 36-page Home Remedy Book to those in the Carolinas region.
Other validation of quality was provided by BlueBlue BlueShield of South Carolina which designated South Carolina Spine Center as a Blue Distinction® Center. Designation as a Blue Distinction® Center. According to BCBS, "these facilities’ overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians’ and leading professional organizations’ recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please call your local BlueCross and/or BlueShield plan administrator."
Also related to spine surgery outcomes, South Carolina Spine Center has been ranked in the Top 10 percent of spine programs in the U.S. by an outside entity tracking spine surgery outcomes among hospitals in the nation.
South Carolina Spine Center is the only spine center in the State to track and publish a Clinical Outcome Report Card for health insurance companies and physician referral sources. The clinical outcome study reports outcomes showing use of drugs and functional status scores. New patients coming into South Carolina Spine Center complete an intake form that measures their pain level, severity of symptoms and functional status.
Three months after their first visit, an outside nurse (RN) — not associated with, or employed by the clinic — calls a random sample of these patients and interviews them for functional status, current symptoms and patient satisfaction. This is the most unbiased, statistically relevant method for outcomes.
The clinical outcomes presented here are analyzed by an outside firm that specializes in tracking spine outcomes, and is involved with other spine centers across the U.S. The results show that South Carolina Spine Center receives at its front door the most complex patient base in the region. Patients improved their function, returned to activity, and reduced dependence on pills.
Westchester, Ill. – October 6, 2010 – Surgeons at Self Regional Healthcare’s South Carolina Spine Center in Greenwood, SC now treat patients with a variety of spinal conditions in its new advanced surgical operating room (OR) featuring Brainsuite® iCT from Brainlab.
Self Regional continues its commitment to advanced spinal care by becoming the first institution in the Southeast to use this highly advanced OR technology.
Our neurosurgeons have treated more than 30 patients using Brainsuite iCT since the advanced OR opened on July 19. The first patient was experiencing severe and radiating lower back pain. After the surgeon performed a lumbar spinal fusion involving the L5 S1, the patient was able to return home after a brief hospital stay and is well on their way to a full recovery.
Integrating navigation with diagnostic quality intra-operative images offers tremendous benefit to the patient. The surgeons can perform with a higher level of accuracy in terms of instrument placement, supported by the ability to check that a surgical outcome has been achieved prior to concluding the procedure. This advanced technology has taken the OR to the next level.
Brainsuite iCT is a digitally integrated OR that combines image-guided surgery (IGS), with a multi-slice intra-operative computed tomography scanner (iCT) and comprehensive OR data management. The CT travels on rails over the OR table, providing high-quality intra-operative scanning without waking the patient from anesthesia. It drives access to real-time imaging and enriched patient data that surgeons can use to make timely and informed decisions, as well as obtain pre-closure verification of results. Brainsuite iCT can be used for neuro, spine, ENT, cranio-maxillo-facial, trauma and orthopedic surgeries.
With the digital data management system Brainsuite® Net, patient data from the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) is accessible in the OR. Automatic Image Registration from Brainlab supports instant patient registration of intra-operative images without the need for fiducial markers or landmark recognition for seamless and time-saving navigation for surgeons. The VectorVision® sky navigation platform displays patient data collected during surgery and is equipped with two infrared cameras that verify the patient’s position in the OR.
“Self Regional Healthcare had a strong vision for integrating intra-operative imaging and advanced data management into its spine center. We are proud they chose to collaborate with Brainlab to make that vision a reality for their patients,” said Cameron Georges, Director, Brainlab Inc.
